Photograph Signed: "Joseph A. Califano Jr.", in black ink. B/w 8x10 overall, image 5x7 (one surface). A Harvard Law School graduate, Califano (born 1931) served in various legal positions in the US Department of Defense including General Counsel of the United States Army. He became Special Assistant to the Secretary of Defense and served as President Lyndon Johnson's senior domestic policy aide in 1965. In 1977, Califano became Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare under Jimmy Carter and initiated: the national anti-smoking campaign, Title IX to provide equal opportunity for women in college athletics, and regulations to provide equal access to the handicapped. He also began efforts to collect on defaulted student loans. He was fired in 1979 primarily because of his anti-smoking campaign. Since 1992 he has been chairman of the National Center of Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University. An author, his 12th book, How to Raise a Drug-Free Kid: The Straight Dope for Parents was published in 2009. Fine condition.
