detective for the LAPD for ten years when he published The New Centurions, the first of his
novels and non-fiction drawn from his experience. Joseph Wambaugh, Jr. (1937-2025) had
been with the Los Angeles Police Department for ten years before publishing his first
novel, The New Centurions (1971). Credited with transforming the sub-genre of the
police novel into serious literature, his books also include The Blue Knight (1972), The
Onion Field (1973) and The Choirboys (1975), and his work on the Police Story television
series in the 1970s set standards of realism, dialogue and character development for
subsequent writers of police dramas. Fine condition.
