Treasury Department (Washington, D.C.), 1830 March 12. To Joshua Carpenter, Agent for the Marine Hospital, Penobscot, Maine. Printed text with time period and dollar amount filled in. In full: "Your account as Agent for the Marine Hospital, for the 4th quarter of 1829, has been adjusted at the Treasury; and a balance of 11 11/00 dollars stated to be due from the United States to you; for which you will charge and receipt in the usual manner. Respectfully". Joseph Anderson (1757-1837), a brevet major in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, was appointed justice of the Southwest Territorial Supreme Court in 1791. He later represented Tennessee in the U.S. Senate (1797-1815), and then served for over two decades as U.S. Comptroller (1815-1836). He was President Pro Tem of the Senate in the Eighth Congress. He was a founding member of the Society of the Cincinnati, the influential organization of Revolutionary War veterans (which still exists, composed of the veterans' descendents). Lightly soiled. Horizontal and vertical folds. Integral leaf, which served as mailing cover, bears remnants of a wax seal, and resulting tear at blank top edge. Overall, fine condition.
