Autograph letter signed"J.A.S." in black ink. 1 page, 5x8 folded. January 24, 1878. Written on Western Hotel letterhead. Liverpool, England. In full: "My dear Sawyer, Pray accept my best thanks for all the trouble you have taken & for all the care attention & skill you have brought to bear upon a very difficult subject, requiring the finest taste & most delicate handling - I quite agree with you that your notion is the only one to adopt & will wind up the story at the period you suggest - Many thanks for the cheque. The receipts should be forwarded to Mr. William Henderson, they have the wood pens here. Best I ever met with, Ever yours very truly ". Joseph Ashby-Sterry (1836-1917) was an English poet and novelist. His works include Katharine and Petruchio (1870), Tiny Travels (1874), Boudoir Ballands (1876), The Wooden Midshipman (1881), The Lazy Minstrel (1886), Charles Dickens in Southwark (1888), Nutshell Novels (1891), A Naughtly Girl (1893), A Tale of the Thames (1896) and The River Rhymer (1913). He was also a frequent contributor to the British humor magazine Punch. Ink slightly smeared. Lightly toned. Corners rounded. Slightly worn and soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
