Autograph note signed "J. Ashby-Sterry" in purple ink. 1 page, 3½x4½. December 2, 1884. Trafalgar Square, London, England. Addressed to "Mr. Kitton". In full: "The Garrick picture which have only recently been re-hung are only to be seen on a Wednesday between eleven and one. I have to be away next Wednesday but if you could look in that day week at about eleven-thirty or twelve, I should be most happy to show you the Thackeray pictures. I believe there is no possibility of having them copied. I think there are about four & and bust - Of course you have noticed the Thackeray portraits in the early numbers of Punch & there was a very good one in Mouth by John Leacock. Believe me, to be...Yours faithfully". Joseph Ashby-Sterry (1836-1917) was an English poet and novelist. His works include Katharine and Petruchio (1870), Tiny Travels (1874), Boudoir Ballands (1876), The Wooden Midshipman (1881), The Lazy Minstrel (1886), Charles Dickens in Southwark (1888), Nutshell Novels (1891), A Naughtly Girl (1893), A Tale of the Thames (1896) and The River Rhymer (1913). He was also a frequent contributor to the British humor magazine Punch. Ink bleeding slightly. Lightly toned. Small stains on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
