JOSEPH AUSLANDER, STEPHEN LEACOCK and CLYDE EDDY.
Signatures: "Joseph Auslander/15 October 1930", "Clyde Eddy/Feb. 13, 1931.", "Stephen
Leacock/back again - &/glad to be here. Feb/21. 1931." and "Charles H. Frazier/A pleasant but
too hasty/visit/October 7th 1931", 5½x8 album leaf. American poet, novelist and anthologist
JOSEPH AUSLANDER (1897-1965) is perhaps best known for editing several editions of
the poetry anthology, The Winged Horse (beginning in 1929). His own poetry was
published in a number of journals and general interest publications, and Auslander also
collaborated on two novels with his wife, poet Audrey Wurdeman. From 1937-1945, he was
the poetry consultant and gifts officer for the Library of Congress. British-born Canadian
educator and humorist STEPHEN LEACOCK (1869-1944) published Mark Twain, his
biography of Samuel L. Clemens, the year after he signed this leaf. Perhaps best known for
his masterpiece, Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town(1912), Leacock's other works also
include Literary Lapses (1910), Nonsense Novels (1911) and Arcadian Adventures with the
Idle Rich (1914) as well as a biography on Charles Dickens. CLYDE EDDY was an adventurer
who had a near disastrous experience while exploring the Colorado River in 1927. "Charles H.
Frazier" merits further research. There was a prominent Philadelphia brain surgeon of that
name (1870-1936). Lightly soiled. File holes at blank left edge, one broken through to edge.
