JOSEPH B. CAWTHORN
Signature of the stage musical star and film character actor who coined the term Whiffenpoof.
Signature: "Joseph B. Cawthorn", 3¼x2. New York City native Joseph B. Cawthorn (sometimes credited as Cawthorne), 1868-1949, was a vaudeville, minstrel show and English music hall performer. From the 1890s, he starred in Victor Herbert musicals on Broadway, including The Fortune Teller (1898) and Little Nemo (1908). Called on to buy time by improvising during one stage performance, he began describing imaginary animals, calling one a Whiffenpoof. Yale students in the audience appropriated the name for their glee club. Moving to Hollywood, he appeared in character roles in 55 films, beginning with Secret Studio (1927) and concluding with The Postman Didn't Ring (1942). He played Flo Ziegfeld's father in The Great Ziegfeld (1936). Mounting residue at corners and on verso. Toned. Corners lightly worn. Multiple unknown stains. Otherwise, fine condition.
