JOSEPH H. BALL
Letter responding to an autograph request, with a newspaper photo affixed to the mounting page
Typed Letter signed: "Joseph H. Ball" as US Senator, 1 page, 6x8, affixed to an 8½x11 page which also bears a newspaper photo of Ball. Affixed on verso is a transmittal envelope with Ball's ink stamped frank, and another news photo showing Ball and other Senators conferring with Secretary of State George Marshall. Washington, D.C., 1945 July 31. On his personal Senate letterhead to Ralph E. Ward, Washington, D.C. In full: "In reply to your letter of July 29, I am happy to send you my autograph for your collection. Sincerely". JOSEPH HURST BALL (1905-1993), a journalist and fiction writer, represented Minnesota in the US Senate (1940-1942, 1943-1949). Originally appointed to fill an unexpired term, the Republican gained re-election to a full term. While opposing Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal programs, he strongly supported the President's foreign policy. Initially unpopular at home, his views seemed vindicated by Pearl Harbor. At 35, he was the first Senator to register under the new Selective Service law he had helped to draft. He lost his seat in 1948 to Democrat Hubert Humphrey. From the collection of Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009) a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II. Ward went on to become President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. Fold crease through center. Lightly creased from adhesive mounting on verso. Fine condition.
