JOSEPH H. CHOATE
On New Year's Day, as US ambassador to Britain, he sends an aspiring author
biographic information on three US diplomats.
Autograph Letter signed: "Joseph H. Choate" as US Minister to Britain, 4 pages, 5x7.
London, 1904 January 1. To Mrs. Charles Stirling, in part: "I am interested to hear of the
book you have in progress. Of the persons you ask about I can give you light on only
three, and this I get from Appleton's Encyclopedia of American Biography which you can
probably find in the London Library - certainly in the British Museum." [Biographic
information follows on Christopher Hughes, Richard Rush and John Lowell.] I am sorry to say
that of the others on your list I know nothing, but there must be someone in America who
could look them up. Possibly if you address a letter to Dr. John S. Billings, Librarian of
the New York Public Library in New York City he could tell you. He is employed for that
purpose. Yours very truly". Joseph H. Choate (1832-1917), a New York City lawyer, was
counsel in important cases such as the Tweed Ring prosecution, Standard Oil antitrust
cases and income tax cases. He later served as U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain
(1899-1905) and was head of the U.S. delegation to the second International Peace
Conference at The Hague (1907). Multiple mailing folds. Lightly toned. Pencil notes
(unknown hand) at top of fourth page. Otherwise, fine condition.
