Representative, 1 page, 5x8 affixed to slightly larger sheet.
Washington, D. C., 1873 May 6. To C. A. McCullough, New York City. In
full: "I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your favor of 29th
ult., mailed to me at my home. I was the Mayor of Tuscumbia for three or four
years from /67 to /70. Respectfully, yours truly". Joseph Humphrey Sloss
(1826-1911) practiced law in Illinois, and served in that State's House of
Representatives (1858-1859), but returned home to Alabama for service in the
Confederate army. After serving as Mayor of Tuscumbia, the Democrat served
two terms in the US Congress (1871-1875), and was later a US
Marshall and federal court clerk. Normal mailing folds. Light surface
creases. Slightly toned. Irregularly cut. Otherwise, fine
condition.
