JOSEPH HELLER. Typed Letter signed: "Joseph Heller", 1p, 5¾x7¾. On personal letterhead. New York, N.Y., 1975 November 10. To Jean Garson. In full: "That's a nice letter you wrote, and if I ever come to Los Angeles again I'll know I've got another friend there. It's a dangerous book to show to a clever daughter: in one way or another, she, like mine, will find vindication for every dispute she can remember. Where do you work and what kind of job have you got? Even if you don't answer, I'm glad you wrote to me." Accompanied by Heller's personalized envelope with typed address of Garson, postmarked New York, N.Y., November 11, 1975. Novelist and playwright Heller (1923-1999), formerly a professor of English, is best remembered for his novel Catch-22 (1961), a bitterly humorous look at war and government authority based in part on his own experiences in World War II. The "dangerous book to show to a clever daughter" mentioned here might, of course, be Catch-22, but could also be Heller's Something Happened, recently published when this letter was written, which exposes American domestic society and corporate life to Hiller's style of criticism. Fine condition. Two items.
