relating to his learning that shortly after the assassination of Civil Right
leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. "Martin Luther's telephones had been
tapped and his living quarters bugged". Heller, who disdains this type of
"national defense", nonetheless states that he "would never express
this disapproval aloud, of course...because these courageous guardinas of our
freedom and safety might be bugging me already...." Novelist and playwright
Joseph Heller (1923-1999), formerly a professor of English, is best
remembered for his 1961 novel, Catch-22, a bitterly humorous look at war
and government authority based in part on his own experiences in WWII. His
other novels include Something Happened (1974), Good as Gold
(1979), God Knows (1984) and Closing Time (1994), a sequel to
Catch-22. Slightly creased. Fine condition.
