Joseph Henry requests to have some articles sent to the Institution.
Manuscript Letter Signed: "Joseph Henry", 1½p, 8x10½, front and verso. Smithsonian Institution, Washington, 1869 March 29. To George N. Lawrence, Esq., New York. In part: "Will you oblige us by ordering the articles mentioned in the accompanying list [not included]. Please have them well packed and forward the parcel to this Institution…The Dog-bells are such as you have heretofore selected for us to be sent to the North…." Joseph Henry (1797-1878) served as the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution (1846-1878). The unit of electrical inductance was named "henry" in honor of the physicist who, in 1829, built the first electric motor and later invented low-resistance and high-resistance galvanometers. Creased at folds. Vertical fold touches the "J" in Joseph. Ink notes (unknown hand) at upper left blank margin. Pencil notes (unknown hand) at mid-blank area. Paper clip impression at upper left corner. Ink stains front and verso. Light show through from writing on verso. Small tears at upper, center edge.
