Manuscript Letter Signed: "Joseph Henry" as Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution,
2p, separate sheets, 8x10. Washington, D.C., 1874 April 29. To W.A. Stearns, Jr., Amherst,
Mass, informing him that "although it is contrary to our custom to make any deduction
from the established prices for the publications of the Institution…in your case we will
cheerfully allow a discount of ten per cent on an order to the amount of $20 and of
twenty per cent should the order be for a larger sum…." Joseph Henry (1797-1878)
served as the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution (1846-1878). The unit of
electrical inductance was named "henry" in honor of the physicist who, in 1829, built the first
electric motor and later invented low-resistance and high-resistance galvanometers. Folds,
vertical fold touches "h" in Joseph. Lightly creased, slightly shaded edges. Ink notes (unknown
hand) on verso of page two.
