Jefferson handwrote, signed and dated this letter in 1898 stating that,
because of business in Boston, he can't attend "the festivities"
Autograph letter signed"J Jefferson". 1 page, 8x10. Jan. 5,
1898. Addressed to "My dear Mrs. Allen". In full:"Afraid business
calls me to Boston tonight and with that I can not return in time to join in
your festivities - Wishing you all a happy new year I am faithfully yours".
On stage since the age of three, American actor Jefferson
(1829-1905) starred with Laura Keene's company in 19th century stage
successes such as Our American Cousin, The Cricket on the
Hearth and The Rivals. His most famous part was the title role in
Rip Van Winkle (from 1865), which playwright Dion Boucicault adapted
for him. Lightly toned. Folded in quarters and unfolded. Worn and torn along
folds. Pinhole where folds meet. Otherwise in fine condition.
