Jefferson handwrote, signed and dated this letter in 1884, which enclosed
with flowers and a photograph of his Louisiana house to "Edwina"
Autograph letter signed "J Jefferson". 4 pages, 4¾x7¾ (one sheet
folded, front and verso). Fifth Avenue Hotel, New York, New York, April 12,
1884. Addressed to "My Dear Edwina". In full: "I send you the
photograph of our house in Louisiana. We all hope to see your Father and
yourself there some day - with best wishes for your health and happiness I am
Faithfully yours" and, on page 4, "These flowers have just come from
Hohokus so I know you will accept them". Edwina is possibly Edwina Booth
Grossmann, daughter of fellow actor Edwin Booth. On stage since the age of
three, American actor Jefferson (1829-1905) starred with Laura Keene's
company in 19th century stage successes such as Our American Cousin,
The Cricket on the Hearth and The Rivals. His most famous part
was the title role in Rip Van Winkle (from 1865), which playwright
Dion Boucicault adapted for him. Lightly toned, stained and creased. Folded
twice horizontally and once vertically and unfolded. Random ink stains. Worn
with small tears along folds. Otherwise in fine condition.
