Jefferson handwrote, signed and dated this letter in 1903, enclosing $100 for a memorial and asking that his name not appear in the memorial fund's advertising
Autograph letter signed "J Jefferson". 4 pages, 4¾x7¾ (one sheet folded, front and verso), on stationery from the Fifth Avenue Hotel, Madison Square, New York. May 7, 1903. Addressed to "My Dear Mr. Pond". In full: "I am just in the receipt of your letter. The enclosed circular I have had printed to answer the necessary requests I get for my services and Donations. If my name were to appear for the Benefit you suggest I would simply be overwhelmed with applications from many of my Churches and institutions that abound in our large country - I have signified my approval of the Beecher memorial and beg through you to present the enclosed check for $100 - to the treasurer. I also enclose you our order for two seats as you request. With cordial regards to yourself [illegible] I am Sincerely yours,". On stage since the age of three, American actor Jefferson (1829-1905) starred with Laura Keene's company in 19th century stage successes such as Our American Cousin, The Cricket on the Hearth and The Rivals. His most famous part was the title role in Rip Van Winkle (from 1865), which playwright Dion Boucicault adapted for him. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Small tear in bottom edge. Random ink stains. Ink has bled lightly through paper. Folded in quarters, arrives folded in half. Worn and with pinholes along folds. Otherwise in fine condition.
