Jefferson handwrote, signed and dated this letter in 1903, arranging an
appointment with Rev. Minot J. Savage of the Church of the Messiah Study in New
York City
Autograph letter signed "J Jefferson". 2 pages, 4¾x7¾, on stationery
from Fifth Avenue Hotel, Madison Square, New York, New York. May 7, 1903.
Addressed to Rev. Minot J. Savage, Church of the Messiah Study, 34th Street
& Park Ave, New York. In full: "My Dear Dr. Savage Your letter
just received - If Eleven o'clock next Monday [sic] morning will suit -
your convenience I will be most pleased to call on you for a little talk. If not
any other day will be agreeable to me if next week. Sincerely yours".
Accompanied by: Unsigned envelope with two 2¢ stamps affixed,
postmarked June 13, 1902. On stage since the age of three, American actor
Jefferson (1829-1905) starred with Laura Keene's company in 19th
century stage successes such as Our American Cousin, The Cricket
on the Hearth and The Rivals. His most famous part was the title
role in Rip Van Winkle (from 1865), which playwright Dion Boucicault
adapted for him. Letter is lightly toned and creased. Adhesive residue and paper
loss on verso of page 2. Both sheets have been cut or torn in half and repaired
with tape on verso. Random ink stains. Envelope is toned, stained and soiled.
Tears on left and bottom edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
