Jefferson handwrote, signed and dated this letter in 1898. In it, he thanks a
Doctor Van Dyke for a book a verse and an ink drawing.
Autograph letter signed "J Jefferson". 2 pages, 5½x8¼ (front and
verso), on stationery from the Hotel Brighton, Atlantic City, New Jersey. May
21, 1898. Addressed to "My Dear Dr. Van Dyke". In full: "Your
little book has just reached me - Thanks for the quaint verse you have written
in it. It is the pen & ink sketch of the picture on the stream. Present my
cordial regards to the household of [illegible] and believe me Faithfully
yours". On stage since the age of three, American actor Jefferson
(1829-1905) starred with Laura Keene's company in 19th century stage
successes such as Our American Cousin, The Cricket on the
Hearth and The Rivals. His most famous part was the title role in
Rip Van Winkle (from 1865), which playwright Dion Boucicault adapted
for him. Lightly toned and creased. Random ink stains. Some writing is lightly
smeared. Ink has lightly bled through paper. Folded twice horizontally and
unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
