JOSEPH JEFFERSON
Jefferson handwrote, signed and dated this letter in 1900 requesting old
playbills on a fellow actor
Autograph letter signed "J Jefferson". 2 pages, 5x6½, (1 sheet folded)
on blue stationery imprinted "Buzzard's Bay, Massachusetts". June 11,
1900. Addressed to Joseph N. Ames. In full: "The Mathews
you speak of as acting with Macually is the same as the one mentioned in
my Book. Any old playbills that you can spare I will be pleased to receive.
Thanking you for your curtesy [sic] I am Faithfully yours."
Mathews is probably 19th century English actor Charles James
Mathews, who toured the U.S., France, Australia and India. On stage since
the age of three, American actor Jefferson (1829-1905) starred with
Laura Keene's company in 19th century stage successes such as Our
American Cousin, The Cricket on the Hearth and The Rivals. His
most famous part was the title role in Rip Van Winkle (from 1865),
which playwright Dion Boucicault adapted for him. Lightly toned. Slightly
creased with folds, not at signature. Chipped at upper and lower blank edges at
mid-vertical fold. Otherwise in fine condition.
