Jefferson handwrote, signed and dated this letter in 1897 expressing his
regret that he can't lecture in Dorchester
Authograph letter signed "J Jefferson". 1 page, 8x10 (one sheet
folded) on stationery imprinted "Buzzard's Bay/Massachusetts". July 20,
1897. Addressed to Mrs. Frank L. Tormy. In full: "Dear Madame It
will be quite impossible for me to lecture in Dorchester [illegible]/In my
regret I am Faithfully yours". On
stage since the age of three, American actor Jefferson (1829-1905)
starred with Laura Keene's company in 19th century stage successes such as
Our American Cousin, The Cricket on the Hearth and The
Rivals. His most famous part was the title role in Rip Van
Winkle (from 1865), which playwright Dion Boucicault adapted for him.
Lightly toned. Random ink stains. Folded in quarters and unfolded. Worn along
folds. Pinhole where folds meet. Otherwise in fine condition.
