JOSEPH SZIGETI
Writing friend Frances Winwar to help with his manuscript and sending him a friend's piece of writing to look at
Typed letter Signed: "Joska", 1 page, 7¼x10½. Palos Verdes, California, 1945 August 24. On personal letterhead to "Dear Frances [Winwar]". In full: "Of course I will be happy to rad the galley proofs of your book and I only hope it will reach me at a time when I wont be too swamped with recordings, rehearsals and concerts, and when I will be able to collect my thoughts to a certain extent and make a reasonably intelligent and quotable comment on it. From the enclosed page which I re-wrote under stress last night you will see that my writing bears the signs of anything I do in a hurry and contre coeur. As both copies of my manuscript are already in New York at Mrs. K enton's, 131 east 51st Street, will you be an angel and make any changes necessary in this page (changes that will be necessary in the not very well told story about the old gentleman) and send it straight to her so she can retype it and insert it into the manuscripts which are soon to be delivered to Knopf''s? I am also enclosing a feuilletone in German from the Neue Freie Presse of some years ago which concerns George Sand and which I thought might interest you even though you will probably find it rather crude and melodramatic and non -factual. It belongs to a friend of ours, Hugo Riesenfeld's sister, who had filed it away with some vague hope of a film scenario resulting from it. With the unpredictableness of Hollywood I thought there can be no harm in your having a glance at it, and who knows it might perhaps plant a seed that might sprout from the best seller that I am sure you have written? We have good news from Irene and we are happy in the certainty of seeing them in the Fall of 1946, if not bef ore, for I have just concluded arrangement[s] for Nikita's first American tour under the management of NCAC. Wanda joins me in sending your love. Yours ever," Hungarian virtuoso violinist Joseph Szigeti (1892-1973) debuted as a child prodigy, touring and recording until his retirement in 1960. Known as "the scholarly violinist," he championed works by contemporary composers, including his lifelong friend Bela Bartok. Szigeti and his wife Wanda (Ostrowska) Szigeti lived mostly in the US from 1939 to 1960, returning thereafter to Switzerland. Szigeti's memoirs, With Strings Attached, obviously a work in progress when he wrote this letter, were published in 1947. Szigeti on the Violin appeared in 1969.Normal mailing folds. Lower edge stained and chipped. 1 vertical tear 2½ from left corner. Lightly creased and toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
