JOSEPH LISTER: ANTISEPTIC SURGERY. ALS: "Joseph Lister," 1p, 4½x7. Portland Place, London, 1889 August 15. The English surgeon who founded antiseptic surgery writes to Miss Leary. In full: "I cannot but respect the sentiments expressed in your letter. Soiled, creased, lightly stained, slight separation of flap, flap torn on verso. Joseph Lister (1827-1912), the British surgeon and medical researcher, is considered to be the father of antiseptics and modern surgery. Lister served as the chair of clinical surgery at Kings College from 1877 until his retirement from surgical practice in 1893, just four years after this letter was written. He had been created a Baronet in 1883, and was named Baron Lister of Lyme Regis in 1897 as a result of his contributions to the medical profession. Two items.
