Manuscript letter from Nourse requesting for glasses to be made to his specifications,
and closes with his respectful wishes to the glass maker and his friend
Manuscript letter signed: "Joseph Nourse", in black ink, 8x9½ affixed to a 8½x9¾ sheet. In
part: "Dear Sir: I send you herewith three shelletons for the purpose of having glasses
put into them No 18.h20 & no 22, please to put them in commons Cases. Return them
when convenient by the mail. Receive my best respect + pray give them affectionately to
your friend Mr Young". London-born Joseph Nourse (1754-1841), who moved with his
family to Berkeley County, Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1769, served as military secretary
to General Charles Lee during the American Revolution. In 1779, he settled in
Philadelphia, where he served as Assistant Auditor General for the Board of the
Treasury. Elected as first Register of the Treasury in 1781, Nourse affixed his
signature to Continental currency to authenticate it. He moved with federal government
from Philadelphia to Washington City in 1800, where he served under six Presidents (George
Washington through John Q. Adams) until leaving office in 1829 with the election of President
Andrew Jackson. Heavily toned. Normal mailing folds. Corners slightly worn and creased. Light
surface creases. Binding holes on left margin. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. 1/4 tear on
right margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
