JOSEPH R. WEST. Signature: "JR West/Louisiana", 3½x2¼ card. Joseph Rodman West (1822-1898) was a Republican U.S. Senator from Louisiana from 1871-1877). West, who had been attached to the Maryland and District of Columbia Volunteers from July 17, 1847 to August 10, 1848, went to California in 1849 and became the proprietor of the "San Francisco Price Current" newspaper. West served in California during the Civil War before returning to Louisiana, where he was a Deputy U.S. Marshal and Auditor for Customs (1867-1871) before being elected to the Senate. He was later a member of the Board of Commissioners for the District of Columbia from 1882-1885, when he retired from public life. Slightly soiled, mounting stains at blank left margin on signature side. Mounting remnants on verso (no show through). Overall, fine condition.
