Signed letter of the Italian engineer explaining a "cryptosteady flow." A rare signature!
Typed letter signed: "J. Foa", in black ink, 1 page 6x7. Bethesda, Maryland, August 15, 1992. On his personal letterhead, to "Dear Mr. Stanhope", William Stanhope, Albuquerque, New Mexico, in full: "A cryptosteady flow is a steady flow observed and/or utilized in a coordinate system other than the unique one in which it is steady. Sincerely,". Engineer Joseph V. Foa (1908-1996) taught at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute from 1952 to 1970. A graduate of the Polytechnic Institute of Turin, Foa received doctorates in mechanical engineering. In 1939 he was forced to flee his home due to the invasion of Mussolini's the anti-Semitic regime and arrived in America shortly after the outbreak of World War II. He found work at the Curtis-Wright Aeronautical Laboratory in Buffalo (which became the Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory). After teaching at Rensselaer he accepted a professorial job at George Washington University where he remained until his retirement in 1980. Normal mailing folds. Slightly creased. Fine condition.
