On his personal stationery. To “Dear Norman Jones”. In full:Thank you so much for you letter & good wishes. /Wishing you a happy Xmas/ Sincerely”. Joseph Ward (b. 1932) was an operatic tenor and baritone. Although he started out his singing career as a baritone, originating roles in the operas of both Michael Tippett and Benjamin Britten, Ward went on to become the resident tenor at Covent Garden. He is well-remembered for creating the role of Starveling in A Midsummer Night's Dream and Billy Budd, both by Britten. Ward was also a noted teacher, Jane Eaglen being one of his more famous pupils. He founded the Opera School at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester in 1972 and in 1986 became the head of the school's Vocal Studies department. Single horizontal mailing fold.
