JOSEPHINA DE VASCONCELLOS
Signed handwritten letter of the English sculptor describing her latest invention for "Track Gliding for the Disabled."
Autograph letter signed:"Jospehina de Vasconcello" in black ink. 2 pages (front and verso), 7x5½. Little Longdale, Ambleside, Cumbria, October, 6, 1975. To "Dear Mr. Godward," in full: "Thank you for your letter & the stamp. I am glad you are doing so much to help the Old Folks Club...& sure it must be very rewarding. For a number of years now my spare time has all been devoted to inventing certain aids for the Disabled & lately it has all developed quickly- Here is a photo of me (in winter) showing one of my -verso- prototypes used in "Track Gliding for the market research on how & for what cost it all could be produced, it will be on show at The Disabled Living Foundation in Kensington. ----but this may take some time yet. At present I'm working on an over life size Scuep [sic]: "Reconciliation" for Bradford University Campus. I had the sketch model for it & they liked it- This is something I have really wanted to do for years so it was a splendid surprise. They have chosen a super place for it, With best wishes, Yours sincerely, (Mrs. Banner)" Josephina De Vasconcellos (1940-2005), of Brazilian decent, was an English sculptor, most famous for her piece Reconciliation. She is also known for Holy Family, Mary and Child and Nativity. At one time the world's oldest living sculptor, de Vasconcellos in addition to sculpting invented various contraptions for suspension and gliding (as shown here). While raised and atheist, her religious sculptures are some of the most highly regarded pieces in Britain. Her work is featured at the Liverpool Cathedral, Gloucester Cathedral, and Coventry Theatre (University Bradford) among others.Fine condition.
