JOSEPHINE BAKER The American "Black Venus" signs a promotional photograph for an appearance at the Park Avenue Hotel in Göteborg, Sweden in 1968, the year her French estate was sold to settle her debts. Printed Photograph Signed in Ink: "Friendly/regards/from/Your Josephine/Baker/1968." on inside close-up photograph, 4p, 4x6. Promotional card for Baker's appearance at Restaurant Lorens Berg at the Park Avenue Hotel in Göteborg, Sweden in 1968. The two inside pages feature black and white photographs of Baker (in close-up and in full costume with an ornate headdress). In the Fall of 1968, Baker, who had become a French citizen in 1937, lost her estate, Les Milandes, which she had bought in 1936, because of unpaid debts. Flamboyant dancer and jazz singer Josephine Baker (1906-1975) first attracted attention in the all-Black musical revue Shuffle Along (1921). During the early 1920s, she made regular appearances at the Cotton Club and other New York nightclubs, performing dances created by Blacks. After appearing in La revue Nègre in Paris, Baker became enormously popular in France, where the Parisians had a passion for African-American culture. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Baker experienced health problems, but she continued to perform occasionally through April 1975. Lightly creased. Upper background of photograph and verso are slightly soiled, stray ink mark at lower margin of front cover. Otherwise, fine condition.
