JOSIAH GILBERT HOLLAND
The editor of Scribner's Monthly signs in his real name and his
famous pen name, Timothy Titcomb
Autograph sentiment signed: "Yours truly/J.G. Holland/Timothy
Titcomb", 4¼x1½ slip attached to 6x4 card. Josiah Gilbert Holland
(1819-1881, also known as Timothy Titcomb) is the author of Arthur
Bonnicastle, The Story of Sevenoaks and Nicholas
Mintum, among many others. From its founding in 1869 to the end of
his life, Holland partnered with Charles Scribner as the editor of the famous
Scribner's Monthly. The beginning of Holland's career was troubled
with business misadventures, unsuccessfully running his own periodical and
medical practice before finding employment as a teacher. Yet once he gave up his
medical practice and returned to West Massachusetts, his luck changed for him.
The 1870's was a productive decade for Holland, who published his most famous
novels during that time, including The Mistress and the Manse
(1874). His last novel, The Puritan's Guest (1881) was published
the year he died. Lightly creased and toned. Pencil note (unknown hand) on
verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
