JOSIAH QUINCY, JR.
Impatient ALS in a shaky hand, asking a minister if progress has been made in copying his work. The work in question must have been his Figures of the Past, published posthumously in 1883.
Autograph Letter signed: "Josiah Quincy", 1 page, 4x5. May 23, n. y. To Rev. M. [name illegible], Chester Park. In full: "I have sent my attendant to inquire whether any further progress has been made in copying my work. I am anxious to have it as early as possible & hope there will be no delay. Yours". Josiah Quincy, Jr. (1802-1882), the son of Josiah Quincy III and one of several of that name in a distinguished Massachusetts family, was Mayor of Boston (1845-1849). While mayor he was instrumental in establishing the Massachusetts Board of Education. Near the end of his life, he was persuaded to publish a collection of writings from his personal journal. It was published shortly after his death as Figures of the Past (1883). The papers were edited and re-copied in another hand, and these no doubt were the "copies" elderly Josiah Quincy, Jr. was so anxious to see. His father and his grandson (also named Josiah Quincy) were also mayors of Boston. He should not be confused with revolutionary patriot Josiah Quincy II (1744-1775). Lightly creased and toned.1 vertical 2 horizontal fold creases. Corners and edges ragged. Top and bottom left corners torn away. Otherwise fine condition.
