On University of Windsor (Ontario, Canada) letterhead. Oates has signed with
her married name. She has been married to Ray Smith since the early 1960s.
In full: "Item # 320. Joyce's Anna Livia (Only if it is exactly
as described - with JJs signature)". Pencil note (unknown hand) in lower
right: "Feb 1978/Joyce Carol Oates". Oates, one of America's most critically
acclaimed writers, published her first short story collection, By the
North Gate, in 1963 and her first novel, With Shuddering Fall, one
year later. Her novel Them won the National Book Award in 1970.
The author of over 30 books in many genres, she received the Bram Stoker
award in 1996 for lifetime achievement in horror fiction. Anna Livia was
a central character in Finnegans Wake, a novel published by James
Joyce in 1939. While writing Finnegans Wake, Joyce published excerpts
as "works in progress." Anna Livia Plurabelle, a draft chapter from
the novel, was published in 1930. Fine condition.
