JOYCE IRENE GRENFELL
Handwritten and signed letter from 1965 to a fan about a show and an album
Autograph letter signed "Joyce Grenfell" in blue ink. 2 pages (1 sheet front and verso), 6¾x5, on addressed stationery. April 6, 1965. Addressed to "Mrs. Home". In full: "Dear Mrs. Home/You wrote me such a nice letter - Thank you v. much. I hope you will enjoy the programme when we come to Eastbourne and I'm looking forward to it. The record you have with "Ordinary Moring" on it isn't the newer one. I made one 6 months ago that was released at Christmas on the E.M.I. (His Master's Voice) label. Again thank you so much for your letter- Yours sincerely". Grenfell (1910-1979, born in London) was a British comedienne, singer and actress. She's probably best known for her monologues and one-woman shows. Grenfell was a daughter of privilege and wealth whose mother was Nancy Astor's sister. She made her stage debut in 1939 and, during World War II, toured India, North Africa and the Middle East, entertaining British troops with her singing and comedy. She wrote her signature song during the war in 1942: I'm Going to See You Today. She also got her start in movies during the war, with a total of over 20 mostly comedy movies and TV shows to her credit, and collaborated with Stephen Potter in writing a series of 30 satirical programs called the "How" series. Her wartime journals were publised in 1989 as The Time of My Life: Entertaining the Troops. Lightly toned and creased. Light crease in one corner. Adhesive residue and slight paper loss in left corners of page on front, which have discolored page on verso. Page has been folded in half and unfolded.
