JOHN J. SIRICA
His signed note, affixed to an encyclopedia illustration of his
courtroom during the climactic Watergate trial
Typed Note signed: "John J. Sirica", 6x4. Typed message reads
"Best wishes to Broox Sledge". Affixed below a printed courtroom drawing from
the trial cover-up trial of key Nixon aides, showing John Dean in the witness
stand. Drawing is taken from the Annual Supplement to the World Book
Encyclopedia (1975). Judge John J. Sirica (1904-1992), as Chief
Justice of the U.S. District Court of Washington, D.C., could have turned
the Watergate case over to any of the 15 judges under his supervision,
but chose to hear the case himself, rightly perceiving that there was more to
the matter than a handful of burglars working independently. His instincts were
proved right when he received a letter from defendant James McCord, hinting
about involvement by high public officials. Judge Sirica's handling of the
case resulted in his being named "Man of the Year" by "Time"
magazine in 1973. Sirica's preference for handing down maximum sentences had
earlier earned him the nickname "Maximum John." Light surface creases.
Tape on corners. Slightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
