JUDITH EVELYN

The famous actress pens a letter to an admirer in which she thanks him for writing to her and informs him she had granted him with the requested photograph, signed in blue ink

Autograph Letter Signed: “Judith Evelyn” in blue ink. 5¼x7. Two pages. No place. No date. Addressed to: John Baller, New York City, New York. In full:My dear Mr. John Baller, Thank you so much for your charming letter. The enclosed is the only picture I have at the moment to send out and hope it will serve. It was exceedingly kind of you and take the time and trouble to write me such a nice letter and I am very pleased you liked and play and my performance. Sincerely yours, Judith Evelyn.” American actress Judith Evelyn (1913-1967) appeared in four Broadway plays, beginning with Angel Street (which became the film Gaslight) in 1941. She had small but well remembered roles in several films, including the alcoholic "Miss Lonelyhearts" observed by Jimmy Stewart in the Hitchcock classic Rear Window (1954), and Mrs. Higgins in Vincent Price's The Tingler (1959). She was seen on many of the TV playhouses of the 1950s. Judith Evelyn and her husband, Canadian radio producer Andrew Allen, survived the sinking of the SS Athena, the first British passenger ship torpedoed by a German U-boat in World War II (September 3, 1939). Lightly worn and creased. Sticker affixed on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
