Addressed to: John Baller, New York City, New York. In full: “My dear Mr. John Baller,
Thank you so much for your charming letter. The enclosed is the only picture I have at the
moment to send out and hope it will serve. It was exceedingly kind of you and take the time and
trouble to write me such a nice letter and I am very pleased you liked and play and my
performance. Sincerely yours, Judith Evelyn.” American actress Judith Evelyn (1913-1967)
appeared in four Broadway plays, beginning with Angel Street (which became the film
Gaslight) in 1941. She had small but well remembered roles in several films, including the
alcoholic "Miss Lonelyhearts" observed by Jimmy Stewart in the Hitchcock classic Rear
Window (1954), and Mrs. Higgins in Vincent Price's The Tingler (1959). She was seen on
many of the TV playhouses of the 1950s. Judith Evelyn and her husband, Canadian radio
producer Andrew Allen, survived the sinking of the SS Athena, the first British passenger
ship torpedoed by a German U-boat in World War II (September 3, 1939). Lightly worn
and creased. Sticker affixed on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
