JUDY GARLAND and SIDNEY LUFT
Judy Garland and third husband Sidney Luft signed this document in 1963 to
file a joint tax return for 1962. Accompanied by the couple's unsigned 1040
income tax return form for 1962.
Document signed "Michael Sidney Luft" and "Judy Garland Luft,"
both in blue ink. 2 pages, 8½x12¾. Oct. 15, 1963. Garland and Luft signed
this document to declare that they would file a joint federal income tax return
for 1962. Lightly toned and creased. Irregular top edge. Staple holes near top
edge. Folded once near bottom edge and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
Accompanied by: Annotated document unsigned, filled out in pencil. 2
pages, 1 sheet front and verso. U. S. Individual Income Tax Return Form 1040 for
1962 for Sidney and Judy Garland. According to this document, the couple
earned $116,489.50 and owed $13,931.13 in taxes in 1962. They claimed a total of
$34,268 in deductions and four dependents: children Lorna, Liza and Joseph and
Luft's mother Leonora. Lightly toned and creased. Missing top right corner.
Staple and file holes at top edge. Light dents in top and bottom edges. Light
nicks in top, left and bottom edges. Otherwise in fine condition. Garland and
Luft were married from 1952 to 1962. It was the third marriage for Garland and
second for Luft. The multi-talented GARLAND (1922-1969) sang on stage
with her sisters in the late 1920s and appeared on records and films from 1936,
but her breakthrough to superstardom came with her role as Dorothy in The
Wizard of Oz (1939), singing her signature song Over the
Rainbow. A competent actress and superbly gifted singer, Garland won
an Oscar (with 2 more nominations), three Grammys (plus 6 of her recordings in
the Grammy Hall of Fame), a Tony, and at least three Emmy nominations during
her legendary career. By the late 1940s, her film career was suffering as a
result of personal problems, including struggles with alcohol and the
barbiturates that finally killed her, but she made a dazzling comeback in
concert tours of the 1960s, especially Judy at Carnegie Hall (1961).
Garland is the mother of actress Liza Minnelli and screenwriter/producer Lorna
Luft. LUFT (1915-2005), born Michael Sidney Luft, was an American film
producer who's probably best known as Judy Garland's third, and longest
lasting, husband (1952-1965). Luft produced three Broadway productions for
Garland between 1956 and 1967, as well as Garland's comeback film A Star
is Born (1954), which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress
in a Leading Role.
