JULES MASSENET
Thoughtful letter by the composer to a friend who just returned from Italy

February 15. To “Dear Madam”. In French, translated: “Your letter giving me news of your
return from Italy gave me great pleasure, dear Madame, since it assures me of your faithful
feelings on behalf of your dear husband and yourself. At present I am paying the price of the
winter of 1895. I have been ill for a week. I am eager to go out and find out about your
transcription at Meincitrel [?] - your editor! My best wishes to you both from your devoted
friend”. French composer Jules Massenet (1842-1912) made his name with the comic opera
Don César de Bazan (1872). Other operas followed, including Manon (1884), considered
by many to be his masterpiece, Le Cid (1885) and Werther (1892). In addition to his
ambitious operas and orchestral works, Massenet wrote over 200 popular songs, many of
them based on published poems. Around the time he wrote this letter, Massenet had
recently achieved another success, his opera Thais (1894). Pencil notes (unknown hand) at
top margin. Binding holes at center vertical fold. Lightly soiled and toned. Otherwise, fine
