Autograph Letter Signed: "Massenet" in blue ink. 4½x6. Double-matted and framed with a head-and-shoulders photograph of the composer to an overall size of 15x12. May 9, 1912. Letter in French, in part (translated): "With the greatest joy, and being very honored by your letter, I say to you: See you next Sunday, 12 May, at 5:30 (sharp, alas!), 48 rue de Vaugirard." Jules Émile Frédéric Massenet (1842-1912) was a French composer best known for his operas. While still a schoolboy, Massenet was admitted to France's principal music college, the Paris Conservatoire. After winning the country's top musical prize, the Prix de Rome, in 1863, he composed prolifically in many genres, but quickly became best known for his operas. He wrote more than forty stage works in a wide variety of styles, from opéra-comique to grand-scale depictions of classical myths, romantic comedies, lyric dramas, as well as oratorios, cantatas and ballets. His best known works to this day are "Manon," "Werther," and "Thais." Massenet later became a professor at the Conservatoire. He taught composition there from 1878 until 1896. Lightly toned. Horizontal crease across center. Red pencil mark through middle of letter. Otherwise, fine condition. Framed by unknown individual
