JULES MASSENET
Letter from the composer (1899) written "in the country," assuring a friend that he will be
at the next meeting
Autograph Letter signed: "Massenet", 1p, 4½x7. "à la campagne" [in the country], 1899
June 20. To "My great friend". In French, translated in full: "We are far, far from Paris, in
complete solitude - but your letter found its way, and I am always happy to be remembered by you
whom I admire so much. I will be at the next meeting. All the best to you!". French composer
Jules Massenet (1842-1912) made his name with the comic opera Don César de Bazan
(1872). Other operas followed, including Manon (1884), considered by many to be his
masterpiece, Le Cid (1885) and Werther (1892). In addition to his ambitious operas and
orchestral works, Massenet wrote over 200 popular songs, many of them based on
published poems. In 1899, the same year he wrote this letter, Massenet purchased a home in
Egreville, in the Department of Seine et Marne, and spent summers there with his wife
Ninon. It was probably from his new home in Egreville that Massenet wrote this letter.
