JULES MASSENETThe composer writes a complimentary letter to Jules Danbé, the conductor of his new opera Sapho Autograph Letter signed: "Massenet", 1 page, 4½x7. Saturday Night, 1897 November 6, after the first rehearsal of Sapho. To "My good friend" (Jules Danbé). In French, translated in full: “You were so perfectly perfect at that rehearsal - and, in any case, you seemed so happy to make the work of your old companion sound good that I had to thank you one more time and embrace you. [Text below signature difficult to decipher]”. French composer Jules Massenet (1842-1912) made his name with the comic opera Don César de Bazan (1872). Other operas followed, including Manon (1884), considered by many to be his masterpiece, Le Cid (1885) and Werther (1892). Massenet wrote Sapho, a 5-act opera, in 1897. It opened at the Opera Comique in Paris on November 27, with Jules Danbé directing the orchestra. The work was well received but did not become part of the standard repertoire of French opera. French violinist and orchestra conductor Jules Danbé (1840-1905) led the orchestra of the Opera Comique from 1877 to 1898. He had conducted during several premiers of Massenet's operas, including Manon. Sapho was Danbé's last performance at the theater. Left edge slightly worn (previous binding). Pencil smudges at upper left margin. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Horizontal fold creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
