Letter from the French composer regarding logistics dated 1906
Autograph letter signed: "J. Massenet", 7x4½. December 7, 1906. To "Dear friend". In French, translated, in full: "I have your letter, thanks a lot! But this first rehearsal scheduled for tomorrow is falling apart for me! Weeks ago I was free…and tomorrow Saturday is an impossibility because of the Election at the Institute./ I beg- you understand- I beg Mr. [name difficult to decipher] to wait for me this [one word difficult to decipher] rehearsal and to schedule it on it doesn't matter what day, the even the next Sunday perhaps!!...but not tomorrow!". Writing along the left edge is difficult to decipher, but it seems to concern letting the artist know that the first rehearsal will happen soon. French composer Jules Massenet (1842-1912) made his name with the comic opera Don César de Bazan (1872). Other operas followed, including Manon (1884), considered by many to be his masterpiece, Le Cid (1885) and Werther (1892). In addition to his ambitious operas and orchestral works, Massenet wrote over 200 popular songs, many of them based on published poems. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on top margin. Multiple folds. Bottom edge frayed and irregular. Corners slightly worn and creased. Ink smudges across. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
