Letter from the composer to a friend, inquiring about a missing photo by Reutlinger
Autograph Letter signed: "Massenet", 1 page, 7x4½. No place, April 16. To "Very dear friend". In French, translated in full: "Do you have the photo by Reutlinger? (The profile?) Are you still missing it? As for me, I miss the pleasure of seeing you always!" French composer Jules Massenet (1842-1912) made his name with the comic opera Don César de Bazan (1872). Other operas followed, including Manon (1884), considered by many to be his masterpiece, Le Cid (1885) and Werther (1892). In addition to his ambitious operas and orchestral works, Massenet wrote over 200 popular songs, many of them based on published poems. Charles Reutlinger (1818-1881) founded a celebrated photo studio in Paris in 1862. He photographed, and made visitors cards for, many famous artists, musicians and public figures. After his death, the studio was run briefly by his brother, and then- with renewed success-by his nephew Leopold Reutlinger. The studio finally closed after Leopold was blinded in one eye by a champagne cork in 1930. Lower edge fairly ragged. Vertical fold crease. Lightly soiled and creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
