JULES MASSENETLetter to composer Helene Moulins, telling her that since his trip to Vienna is delayed, he won't be able to visit her Autograph Letter signed: "J. Massenet". 1p, 4½x7. No place, 1901 April 15. Accompanied by original envelope (4¾x3¾) addressed in his hand to "Mademoiselle Helene Moulins/Composer of Music/in Nancy", postmarked Paris [date illegible], 1901. To "Dear Mademoiselle" [Helene Moulins]. In French, translated in full: “Since yesterday evening the trip to Vienna is postponed. Hence I cannot arrange the return by way of Nancy...especially as Mr. Mengel put off going to Vienna because of an appointment [1 word indecipherable] at the same time./ Life is full of constant uncertainty and I'm so sorry to not be able to go [2 words indecipherable] that I still don't know this year/ To you and your family". French composer Jules Massenet (1842-1912) made his name with the comic opera Don César de Bazan (1872). Other operas followed, including Manon (1884), considered by many to be his masterpiece, Le Cid (1885) and Werther (1892). In addition to his ambitious operas and orchestral works, Massenet wrote over 200 popular songs, many of them based on published poems. Envelope is slightly soiled. Top ragged and missing top right corner. Letter has a horizontal fold. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
