Massenet lists a couple vocalists of interest in a letter sent while traveling
Autograph letter signed: "M. Massenet", 4½x7. August 18, no place. To “Dear friend,/ Very
dear friend”. In French, translated in full: “Here is the distribution for “La Terre Promise”
[Promised Land] “The baritone (1st part) Mr. Noté from the Opera. The tenor (2nd part)/ 12
tenors in unison/Soprano (3rd part)/ Miss Lydia Nervil. [2nd page] I am so overwrought by your
thoughts and I find you so happy to live in this hotel in the middle of such terrifying beauty!/
What a country this Italy is, that [3 words indecipherable] and Rome…[2 words
indecipherable]. Dearly yours”. French composer Jules Massenet (1842-1912) made his name
with the comic opera Don César de Bazan (1872). Other operas followed, including Manon
(1884), considered by many to be his masterpiece, Le Cid (1885) and Werther (1892). In
addition to his ambitious operas and orchestral works, Massenet wrote over 200 popular
songs, many of them based on published poems. Massenet composed several tunes put to
the words of poet Camille Distel, including "Bonne Nuit". Toned. Corners lightly worn.
