JULES MASSENETHandwritten musical quotation and drawing, followed by a French verse, dated by the composer on New Year's Eve, 1906 Autograph Musical Quotation signed: "J. Massenet", 1p, 4½x7. No place, 1906 December 31. The 19th century French composer has written 2 bars of music and captioned them in pencil. He also made illustrations to the left of the music. Curiously, the lyrics accompanying his musical quotation are in German. Four lines of handwritten text are in French, translated in full "All has arrived in perfect condition!/ All was welcomed with gluttony/ All was at the heart of it, also, [2 words indecipherable]/ Your faithful friend!" In the year he penned this document, Massenet's Ariane was staged by the Paris Opéra. French composer Jules Massenet (1842-1912) made his name with the comic opera Don César de Bazan (1872). Other operas followed, including The Virgin (1880), Manon (1884, considered by many to be his masterpiece), Le Cid (1885) and Werther (1892). Lightly creased with folds. Light stain affects 10 words, the drawing and the music, not at signature; writing and drawing completely legible. Pinhead-size hole at lower left blank corner. Mounting tape remnants at upper margin of verso of integral leaf (no show-through), which is lightly soiled. Overall, fine condition.
