JULES MASSENET
Signed autographed note from his home in Egreville (1906), arranging a meeting in
Paris on this 5½x3½ picture postcard
Autograph Note on Picture Postcard Signed: "J. Massenet", 5½x3½ postcard with b/w
printed photo of a chateau in Egreville. Egreville, France, 1906 July 30. In French, loosely
translated: "My dear friend, Here is my photograph of our painter decorator from Monte
Carlo. [Item not included.] If you receive the two models for Thevige, would you meet me
at the Theatre Francais on Monday, August 6 (at 2 o'clock). I will have a half hour free in
Paris, and will come on time. Sincerely". French composer Jules Massenet (1842-1912)
made his name with the comic opera Don César de Bazan (1872). Other operas
followed, including Manon (1884), considered by many to be his masterpiece, Le Cid
(1885) and Werther (1892). In addition to his ambitious operas and orchestral works,
Massenet wrote over 200 popular songs, many of them based on published poems. In 1899,
Massenet purchased a home in Egreville, in the Department of Seine et Marne. He
and his wife spent there summers there, in the French fashion. Creased at corners. Lightly
toned. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
