JULES MASSENETNote from the French composer saying he hopes to be able to attend an upcoming function Calling card signed: "J Massenet", in black ink, 4¼x2¾. 1881 November 21. To "Sir" In French, translated in full: "I am very touched by your friendly desire to help [3 words difficult to decipher] general-/ I will add you to my list- and I want to hope that a largesse of generosity will allow me the great pleasure of visiting you." Massenet is presumably referring to the premiere of Herodiade, which took place in Brussels the following month. French composer Jules Massenet (1842-1912) made his name with the comic opera Don César de Bazan (1872). Other operas followed, including Manon (1884), considered by many to be his masterpiece, Le Cid (1885) and Werther (1892). In addition to his ambitious operas and orchestral works, Massenet wrote over 200 popular songs, many of them based on published poems. Toned. Corners slightly worn. Adhesive residue on verso. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Fine condition.
