JULES ROMAINS. Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Mr. Leonard
Aucoin/with my cordial wishes/Jules Romains" in French. B/w, 6¾x9½.
Captioned at lower margin. Pencil notes (likely in Aucoin's hand) on verso state
that this photograph was received on July 3, 1956. French writer Jules
Romains (1885-1972), born Louis Henri Jean Farigoule, along with Georges
Chenneviere (1884-1929), was the co-founder and chief exponent of Unanimisme,
a literary movement that emphasized the unifying principles of human groups
over individual personalities. Before WWI, Romains was primarily a poet
who published such works as La Vie unanime (1908). He later published
his principal work, Men of Good Will (27 volumes, 1932-1946), and
novels, including The Death of Nobody (1911) and The Boys in the Back
Room (1913). Romains' plays, including Cromedeyre-le-Vieil (1920) and
Doctor, Knock (1923), are considered masterpieces of French
theater. Romains, who was elected to a chair in the French Academy in
1946, held the position until his death in 1972. Lightly creased at corners.
Slightly soiled at lower margin. Fine condition.
