Autograph Letter signed: "Julia Marlowe Sother", 1 page, 5x6½. Kansas City, Missouri, 1922 February 2. To "Dear, dear Dot", in full: "Congratulations, and all good wishes for you and the new babe Mary. Tell Stuart I am glad he likes me! And dear little friend, know that you are one of the sweet memories to me of an earlier time. I look forward to knowing all those babes 'anon'. Affectionately yours".
Julia Marlowe (1866-1950) was born to English parents, who immigrated to the United States in 1870. After regional performances, she began the first of over 70 Broadway roles in 1895. In 1911 she married Edward Hugh (E. H.) Sothern (1859-1933), an American-born English actor, her acting and business partner since 1904. The couple were considered the outstanding American Shakespearean actors of their generation, paired in Romeo and Juliet, Antony and Cleopatra, Hamlet, Macbeth and other plays. Large tear on left margin at mailing fold. Corners slightly worn and creased. Lightly soiled on verso. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
